Madison is the state capitol of Wisconsin. The town is set between two lakes,
Mendota (Lake of the setting sun) and Monona (Lake of the rising sun). The
population is about 250 000, and includes a large number of University of
Wisconsin students and faculty together with politicians and government-associated
workers. The mile-long State Street connects the striking Capitol building
with the University of Wisconsin, from Monona Terrace (a Frank Lloyd Wright
building) to the Memorial Union on Lake Mendota. This is a very eclectic town
with a high standard of living, and remarkable cultural resources. Outdoor
recreational opportunities abound with many local State Parks, Rivers, the
Lakes and bicycle and hiking trails throughout the town and local countryside.
Local farmers bring produce to market on Saturdays throughout the summer,
and this includes the very best in vegetables, meat and flowers. Scared of
the climate? Don’t be – southwestern Wisconsin is in the “sunbelt”
– glorious blue sky winter days with ski trails and ice-skating, and
a warm-hot but not humid summer with lots of Lake swimming.
